Understanding Anger


Feeling angry is a natural and normal emotion, and for some people it can appear quickly and be intense, and for others it can simmer beneath the surface. Anger is often a signal for a boundary being crossed, or a need being unmet but because it can be so overwhelming, sometimes people who experience anger are left feeling guilty, or ashamed, but what's interesting is at some point in their life, maybe anger was the safest emotion to show. Anger rarely exists on its own, and is usually the 'protective emotion'. It can create a sense of control or strength when other emotions might be perceived as leaving you vulnerable and exposed. 


How Counselling Can Help

When I explore anger with clients, it isn't about getting rid of the feeling, it's about understanding your anger and what it's trying to communicate to you. I am providing a safe, confidential space to explore the roots of your anger and develop strategies to manage it effectively. Together, we can:


  • Identify patterns that trigger anger or frustration


  • Learn coping strategies and grounding techniques to respond calmly


  • Explore underlying feelings such as stress, fear, or resentment


  • Build healthier communication skills and confidence in expressing emotions


  •  Reduce the cycle of anger followed by guilt or shame 


  • Strengthen self-awareness and self-compassion


What to Expect in our Counselling Sessions When Exploring Anger

Some clients want practical strategies to manage anger immediately, while others want to explore the deeper causes behind it. We’ll work at your pace and focus on what feels most helpful for you.

  

I'm based in Chorlton if you are looking for face to face support, which is a great location for clients located in Didsbury, Stretford,  Withington, and surrounding areas in South Manchester. Sessions are 50 minutes and are also available online or via telephone. Together, we’ll set achievable goals and practice strategies that help you respond to anger more constructively. Over time, counselling can help you better equipped to handle challenging situations.
