What is Hypnotherapy?
There are a lot of myths around hypnotherapy, and I've often been asked if I'm going to start the session by asking the client to stare at a twirling clock, letting them fall into a deep sleep where I have full control over their mind... In actual fact, hypnotherapy is a gentle, evidence-based approach that focuses on helping your mind and body move out of stress and into a calmer, more balanced state. It can be seen as a relaxed altered state of consciousness which is a similar feeling as to when you are absorbed in a book or tv programme, or that drifting feeling you get just before sleep. You remain in full control and you are able to stop at any time. Hypnotherapy works by communicating with your subconscious mind while in a state of deep relaxation, and this means that even during hypnosis, your mind can still decide what information to accept, and what information to reject.
How I Use Hypnotherapy in My Work
I've seen many clients feeling tense and stuck in anxious thinking disconnected from themselves. Hypnotherapy helps reduce this build-up, and focusses on allowing your nervous system to settle and reset.
I use Solution focussed Hypnotherapy which doesn’t involve analysing the past in detail or reliving difficult memories. Instead, it works with how your brain functions now and what will help you feel better moving forward. Solution focussed hypnotherapy supports emotional regulation and helps clients feel safer in their bodies.
Sessions usually include:
Gentle psychoeducation about how stress affects the brain and body
Relaxation techniques to calm the nervous system
Guided hypnosis focused on safety, calm, and positive change
Why I Use This Approach
I was drawn to Solution Focused Hypnotherapy because of how respectful and empowering it is. Rather than digging into pain, it supports the brain in doing what it naturally knows how to do which is heal, regulate, and adapt.
As a therapist, I also use self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques myself. I’ve experienced first-hand how powerful it can be to calm the nervous system and create space between stress and response. It’s one of the tools that helps me stay grounded in my work, and that personal experience informs how I offer it to clients.
After sessions, many clients describe feeling:
For some, the change feels subtle at first. For others, the relief is immediate. Over time, sessions can help reduce baseline stress levels so that difficult thoughts and emotions feel more manageable.
The purpose of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy isn’t to erase problems or force positivity. It’s to help your brain move out of survival mode and into a place where emotional balance becomes easier which helps with decision making and being able to move forward.
Hypnotherapy sessions are always led with respect and I ensure before we start any hypnosis, you understand the process and feel comfortable in continuing. My role is to guide and support you, helping your nervous system slow down and settle in a way that feels safe and comfortable. If at any point something doesn’t feel right, we pause or adjust. This is your space, and your experience matters.
